Welcome to my podcast. I am Doctor Warrick Bishop, and I want to help you to live as well as possible for as long as possible. I’m a practising cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network. I have over 20 years as a specialist cardiologist and a private practice of over 10,000 patients.

In this podcast, Doctor Warrick Bishop discusses the four main valves in the heart and how they can be subject to wear and tear, causing problems if they leak or become too narrow.

He shares some of the technology that's on the way to potentially help people with valve issues, such as percutaneous or transcatheter techniques that can avoid major surgery. The most common type of valve problem is narrowing of the aortic valve, which can be treated with a new valve deployment technology that is becoming more and more accepted practice, particularly for older high-risk patients. The mitral valve can also be treated with percutaneous techniques, but it's not as advanced as the aortic deployment technology and is currently only for the very high-risk patients who wouldn't get through surgery.

Doctor Bishop also discusses the tricuspid valve, which runs at much lower pressures than the left side, making it a positive and optimistic space for percutaneous transcatheter edge-to-edge repair. He recommends getting an up-to-date ultrasound of the heart, a 24-hour blood pressure monitor, and seeing a cardiologist for preventative and maintenance strategies.

  • There are four main valves in the heart: the tricuspid valve, the pulmonary valve, the mitral valve, and the aortic valve.
  • Valve problems can cause issues if they leak or become too narrow.
  • Percutaneous or transcatheter techniques can be used to improve or alter valve function or deploy new valves through non-invasive techniques.
  • The aortic valve is the most common type of valve problem, and sticky aortic valves can be a real problem.
  • Percutaneous or transcatheter techniques can be used to deploy new aortic valves through a blood vessel in the leg.
  • The mitral valve can also cause problems if it leaks, but the technology for repairing it is not as advanced as the technology for the aortic valve.
  • The trans-catheter edge to edge repair is a technique that can be used to fix the mitral valve by clipping the two sides of the valve and opposing them together.
  • The tricuspid valve runs at much lower pressures than the left side, and therefore some sort of device may work better.
  • Percutaneous transcatheter edge-to-edge repair of the tricuspid valve can be done quite effectively and can be done while patients still only have moderate TR and have not yet advanced.
  • It is important to get regular check-ups to ensure that your heart valves are functioning properly, and to consider getting a baseline echocardiogram and a 24-hour blood pressure monitor.

Australia, like the rest of the western world, has a heart problem.

Over 9 million people around the world die from heart disease every year.

Every 10 minutes, someone in Australia suffers a heart attack. And 21 lives are lost daily because of it.

The devastating fact in all of this is…

Almost every one of those cases could have been prevented.

This podcast is for anyone who wants to improve their health literacy and gain information to help them make the best decisions about their risk of heart attack, their cholesterol, blood pressure, risk of diabetes, weight loss and general health. Join me on my personal mission journey to prevent Heart Attack on a global scale. If you like this podcast, I would be honoured by a 5-star review and appreciate if you let your friends and family know about this podcast; you may even save the life of someone you love!

Are You at Risk of a Sudden Heart Attack? How Healthy is Your Heart? Really?

Heart disease is the #1 killer in the Western World. In Australia, someone dies every 28 minutes from heart disease. That’s 51 people a day. In the US, someone has a heart attack every 40 SECONDS! Fortunately, many heart attacks are preventable. However, regular exercise and eating healthy are no guarantee you won’t succumb to this silent killer.

  • 94% of Australians have at least One Risk Factor for heart disease.
  •  59% of Australians have been Touched by heart disease.
  •  Yet only 3% of Australians have had a Full Heart-Health Assessment in the past 12 months.
