Welcome to my podcast. I am Doctor Warrick Bishop, and I want to help you to live as well as possible for as long as possible. I’m a practising cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network. I have over 20 years as a specialist cardiologist and a private practice of over 10,000 patients.

In this episode, Doctor Warrick Bishop and Doctor Helen Cooley, a rheumatologist, discuss osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become thin and fragile, making them more prone to breaking. Age is the main factor in developing osteoporosis, but other factors such as genetics, diet, and lifestyle can also contribute. It is estimated that over a million Australians have osteoporosis, and 60% of people over 50 have either osteoporosis or osteopenia. Bone density scans are available at 70 years of age and are covered by Medicare. It is interesting to note that if someone has a fracture and is in the osteopenic range, it is considered to be osteoporosis.

  • Age is the main risk factor for developing osteoporosis, but other factors such as diet, genetics, and certain medical conditions can also increase the risk.
  • A DEXA scan is used to measure bone density and compare it to a normal bone density when you were in your 20s and 30s.
  • It is estimated that over a million Australians have osteoporosis and if you are 50 or over, it is estimated that about 60% of the population has osteoporosis or osteopenia.
  • A bone density scan at 70 is recommended for screening, but if you have any of the risk factors listed, you should be screened earlier.
  • There is a Medicare rebate for the bone density scan at 70.
  • Family history of osteoporosis is a risk factor and can trigger earlier screening.
  • Hip fractures in older people have a 50% chance of never returning home and a 30% chance of death within a year.
  • The Healthy Heart Network offers a lifetime membership for $5 which provides access to resources and information about heart health and risk of heart attack.
  • Positive steps can be taken to improve your risk of heart attack and osteoporosis.
