Welcome to my podcast. I am Doctor Warrick Bishop, and I want to help you to live as well as possible for as long as possible. I’m a practising cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network. I have over 20 years as a specialist cardiologist and a private practice of over 10,000 patients.

This episode discusses the differences between heart attacks and heart failure, and the potential for AI tools to help in diagnosis and treatment of heart conditions.

Heart Attacks vs Heart Failure

A heart attack occurs when a major artery to the heart is suddenly blocked, cutting off blood flow and oxygen. This can cause the heart rhythm to become irregular and lead to collapse.

Heart failure means the heart is not pumping enough blood to the organs. This can cause fatigue, shortness of breath and fluid retention in the body.

Does AI Have a Place in Medicine?

AI tools have the potential to make doctors' jobs easier and improve care for patients:

  • reading cardiac scans faster and more accurately than humans, potentially spotting abnormalities that doctors may miss. This could lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment
  • automating routine tasks like note drafting to free up doctors' time
  • analyzing patient data and research to gain insights

However, there are valid concerns about:

  • patient privacy and data security
  • maintaining medical standards and the integrity of the profession
  • understanding the limitations of AI and how it should be used to assist, not replace, doctors

Takeaways:

  • Heart attack is caused by a sudden blockage of an artery to the heart, cutting off blood flow and oxygen. Heart failure is when the heart cannot pump enough blood to the body's organs.
  • Symptoms of heart failure include fatigue, shortness of breath, and swelling of the ankles and legs due to fluid buildup.
  • Heart failure can develop slowly over time or come on suddenly, requiring emergency care.
  • Medications can help treat heart failure but early identification and treatment is important for the best outcomes.
  • New AI technology has potential to improve diagnosis of heart conditions by analyzing scans faster and more accurately.
  • There are concerns about privacy, data protection, and the impact on the healthcare system from widespread AI adoption.
  • Changes should be made carefully and deliberately to ensure AI benefits patients while maintaining the integrity of medicine.
  • AI tools could help save doctors time by drafting notes and reports but questions remain about data ownership and security.
  • Bespoke AI systems housed on secure servers may be needed to properly implement AI in healthcare.
  • Early detection of plaque buildup could help identify those at risk of heart attack before symptoms develop.

Australia, like the rest of the western world, has a heart problem.

Over 9 million people around the world die from heart disease every year.

Every 10 minutes, someone in Australia suffers a heart attack. And 21 lives are lost daily because of it.

The devastating fact in all of this is…

Almost every one of those cases could have been prevented.

This podcast is for anyone who wants to improve their health literacy and gain information to help them make the best decisions about their risk of heart attack, their cholesterol, blood pressure, risk of diabetes, weight loss and general health. Join me on my personal mission journey to prevent Heart Attack on a global scale. If you like this podcast, I would be honoured by a 5-star review and appreciate if you let your friends and family know about this podcast; you may even save the life of someone you love!

Are You at Risk of a Sudden Heart Attack? How Healthy is Your Heart? Really?

Heart disease is the #1 killer in the Western World. In Australia, someone dies every 28 minutes from heart disease. That’s 51 people a day. In the US, someone has a heart attack every 40 SECONDS! Fortunately, many heart attacks are preventable. However, regular exercise and eating healthy are no guarantee you won’t succumb to this silent killer.

  • 94% of Australians have at least One Risk Factor for heart disease.
  •  59% of Australians have been Touched by heart disease.
  •  Yet only 3% of Australians have had a Full Heart-Health Assessment in the past 12 months.
