Welcome to my podcast. I am Doctor Warrick Bishop, and I want to help you to live as well as possible for as long as possible. I’m a practising cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network. I have over 20 years as a specialist cardiologist and a private practice of over 10,000 patients.

Doctor Warrick Bishop, a cardiologist, author, and keynote speaker, discusses heart health and the importance of managing valves. He recommends getting an echocardiogram to check for valve problems, such as a bicuspid aortic valve, mitral valve leakage, and narrowing of the aortic valve.

Historically, doctors have waited until aortic stenosis is severe to operate, but recent data suggests that moderate to severe aortic stenosis can lead to poor outcomes due to left ventricular deconditioning. Therefore, doctors are considering treating aortic stenosis earlier. Additionally, there are promising techniques for repairing the tricuspid valve before it becomes severe, which can lead to deconditioning of the body.

The PAIRS procedure is a preventative surgery that involves wrapping a Dacron mesh around the aorta to hold it in place and reduce its diameter, which can reduce the risk of aneurysm disruption.

Doctor Bishop encourages listeners to join the Healthy Heart Network to understand their risk of heart attack and take positive steps to reduce that risk.

  • Heart disease is a significant problem in Australia, with over 20 people dying from heart disease every day.
  • Most heart disease cases could have been avoided with proper prevention strategies.
  • An echocardiogram is an ultrasound that can help detect valve problems in the heart.
  • A bicuspid aortic valve is a condition where the aortic valve has two leaflets instead of three, which can lead to valve wear and aortic dilation.
  • Moderate to severe aortic stenosis can lead to poor outcomes, and early intervention may be necessary to prevent left ventricular deconditioning.
  • Transcutaneous approaches for repairing the tricuspid valve are becoming more common and may be used to prevent deconditioning of the right heart.
  • Dilatation or expansion of the aorta can be a problem, and a Dacron mesh can be used to hold it in place and reduce its diameter.
  • The PAIRS procedure is a preventative surgery that can reduce the risk of aneurysm disruption for individuals with aortas of about 45mm.
  • The Healthy Heart Network is a community designed to help people understand their risk of heart attack and take positive steps to reduce that risk.
  • Regular follow-ups with a cardiologist are essential for individuals with valve problems or aortic dilation.

Australia, like the rest of the western world, has a heart problem.

Over 9 million people around the world die from heart disease every year.

Every 10 minutes, someone in Australia suffers a heart attack. And 21 lives are lost daily because of it.

The devastating fact in all of this is…

Almost every one of those cases could have been prevented.

This podcast is for anyone who wants to improve their health literacy and gain information to help them make the best decisions about their risk of heart attack, their cholesterol, blood pressure, risk of diabetes, weight loss and general health.
