Hi, my name is Dr Warrick Bishop and welcome to my Healthy Heart Minute. Today, I want to jump on one of my favorite soap boxes on all about prevention.
I think we've got to be constantly vigilant to where there's opportunity to prevent heart attack. Well, here's one that's really important. I regularly see relatively young patients, men in their fifties, for example, or women in their sixties, and we find coronary artery disease. Apart from trading that individual to the best level of care that they deserve, to give them the longest, healthiest life, the thing that I'm really passionate about is asking that individual, do they have siblings or maybe even older kids who we need to look at to make sure we're not missing someone within the family who may have the same problem.
It's a no brainer, but so poorly done, saw it frequently done. And the sad thing for my perspective is I've had several patients now who I've looked them in the eye and said, "We've got to check your family". And I've had people come back and say, my brother's had a heart attack. My sisters died, my husband died.
Now, I know the husband's not related genetically, but nonetheless, the complacency and lack of opportunity to put in place a strategy to save a life. It's just sad.
So I've done a whole podcast on trying to close that loop, being more proactive. Check it out. I think you'll find it interesting.
Until next time. I wish you the very best and hope you live as well as possible, for as long as possible. Goodbye.
