Hi, my name's Dr Warrick Bishop, and I'm a cardiologist. I'd like to take a moment to tell you about Peter's story, which is that of incidental finding of atrial fibrillation.
What we know that about three per cent of the population over 65 years of age don't even know they have atrial fibrillation. The consequence is that it can increase your risk of stroke and in fact, you can present with stroke. In Peter's case, it diminished the way his heart was functioning. This is a common condition and one that we really need to be aware of. Getting checks, opportunistic checks, either at the pharmacy may be a loved one could take your pulse, you may have a young doctor or nurse in the family or visits with the GP. When you're getting your blood pressure checked, you may have a home monitor. It may flash up an error. These may all be indicators of atrial fibrillation.
