Hi, my name's Dr Warrick Bishop, and I'm a cardiologist. I'd like to talk a bit about cholesterol because there's a bit of confusion about it.

In the social media press there are lots of people saying cholesterol is not important and statins are poison. Well, I don't know that that's entirely true. But there is some reason to understand why that is being offered as a position. And that's because if we look at high cholesterol and low cholesterol and try and predict who is going to have a heart attack, then we find that with high cholesterol, not all of them have problems with their arteries. And we find that people with low cholesterol may, in fact, have a heart attack so cholesterol to predict heart attack is not a great way to do it. But we do know from over twenty years of research that if you've got high-risk arteries as defined by someone who's had a heart attack or a stroke, then lowering your cholesterol will help you. No question about that. So recent research is telling us that the lower we can get that cholesterol, the better. Well, it's an interesting space. We've got new agents that are really getting LDL cholesterol down, the bad cholesterol down. I've done a podcast on the very topic below. Please click to that link if you'd like more information.

In the meantime, please recognize cholesterol is not the whole story, but it is important. I wish you good health. And don't die from a heart attack. Goodbye.
