Hi, a number of years ago, I looked after a patient who I knew through the community in which I live. His name was Frank. Frank had had a stent, he also had a little bit of elevated blood pressure, a tiny bit of diabetes, which was pretty well controlled. And he came to see me with some shortness of breath that was really causing him some troubles. Well, everything looked pretty normal. We checked out his heart. He didn't appear to have any further blockages, so he didn't need another stent. And I thought he might have had a little bit of fluid being retained in the body. So I tried him on some fluid tablets. Well, lo and behold, this made an enormous difference for Frank. And he came back a couple of weeks later extolling my virtues, telling me that I made an absolute miraculous difference to his symptomatology.
Well, he had a condition called heart failure with preserved dejection fraction, where the heart just doesn't relax properly. We see more and more of it these days, particularly in people as they age and have other issues going on, such as diabetes, hypertension and ischemicheart disease, or the need for stents or bypass.
