Hi, my name is Dr. Warrick Bishop and welcome to my Healthy Heart Minute. This one is about ventricular ectopic beats.

Now, you may or may not have heard of them. The ventricle is the bottom pumping chamber of the heart, the main pumping chamber. Ectopic means out of place. So, ventricular ectopic beat means a heartbeat that arises out of the place, originating in the ventricle. Most heartbeats originate at the top of the heart.

So, a ventricular beat at a place is one that feels a bit funny because the electrical discharge through the heart is quite altered. It's not going through the normal electrical system that it should be, which gives synchrony, a smooth contraction. The ventricular beat is a bit of a wobble and people feel it. Ventricular ectopic beat is pretty common. We do see them at tons of stress. I'm more likely to see them in people who are sitting exams or having a problem with the ATM, being distracted at work. Less likely to see them in people who have fallen in love, who've just won lotto or have just finished their exams. So ventricular ectopic beats, pretty common. They do give rise to symptoms, generally, nothing to worry about.

I've got a podcast attached to this very video. Check it out. Have a listen. From the healthy heart network, I hope you live as well as possible, for as long as possible. Until next time, take care and bye for now.
