Hi, my name's Dr Warrick Bishop and welcome to my Healthy Heart Minute. Today, I want to talk about triglycerides.
Well, often when we talk about fats in the blood, we talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly. The good is so-called HDL, high density lipoprotein, good cholesterol. The bad, LDL cholesterol. The ugly is triglycerides. They comprise of three fatty acids attached to a glycerol backbone.
Well, what does that mean? Well, It doesn't have to mean much to you unless you're a biochemist, but importantly, too many of these triglycerides around the place causes problems.
What can lower them?
Well, exercise will lower them. Reducing carbohydrates will lower them. Reducing alcohol will lower them. Losing weight will lower them. And avoiding diabetes will lower them. All really important things to do, but there are other things that can help, even fish oil.
Well, if you wanna know more about triglycerides, which are the ugly, have a listen to the podcast attached where I get to talk to Dr Karam Kostner, a world expert in lowering cholesterol.
It's a great interview and you will learn lots from it, I'm sure. For now, though, I'm gonna wish you the very best. Take care and bye for now!
